Geek Outs: September 2023
Drive to Survive, Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce, and the Noah Kahan Collaboration Industrial Complex.
Welcome to the new monthly round up of geek outs where we share everything we’ve been weirdly obsessed with for the last few weeks! In true Omnivore fashion, we’ve got quite the mix from the new Olivia Rodrigo album to the GMAT, so there’s truly something for everyone. Leave your reactions, obsessions, and geek outs of your own in the comments and meet me back here next month for more!
Maddie’s Geek Outs:
Antoni from Queer Eye’s Bachelor Party: Antoni Porowski of the Fab Five is getting married and hosted the most chaotic group of people for his Bachelor Party and I just need someone else to care about this. Of course Queer Eye member Tan France was in attendance with his BFF, Gigi Hadid, which is already iconic. We also have award-winning composer Benji Pasek and actress Reema Sampat, who are both pretty well-known friends of Antoni. But the final two members of the group are what kill me - niche podcast producer PJ Vogt from Reply All and the guy who plays Tom Riddle in the Harry Potter movies?! Dead.
The Noah Kahan Collaboration Industrial Complex: So I definitely made up this conspiracy theory but something is UP with all of the collabs he’s been doing lately, right? I know it’s just that he clearly has an amazing publicist and creative team, but the status and breadth of the people he’s working with is truly incredible - Post Malone, Zach Bryan, Mount Joy, and Kacey Musgraves all this year?! Not to mention Olivia Rodrigo just covered Stick Season on her BBC Radio Hour? It’s just a lot very quickly and it’s making me suspicious for some reason!
Playing Piano: This is a particularly wholesome geek out from me, but I’ve been getting back into playing the piano! I played for about ten years growing up, but in the chaos of college and new emerging interests it got left behind. My mom got me a collection of Chopin waltzes for Christmas last year that I’ve started on and it feels really good to just make music for fun again.
Your Geek Outs:
Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - I’ve loved some of Chappell Roan’s previous songs - Pink Pony Club and Casual - so looking forward to giving this a listen.
Suits - Come for Meghan Markle, stay for the cable-network quality TV drama.
Mothership Sci-Fi Horror RPG Game - I didn’t know a tabletop board game could be spooky, but this one sure looks it!
Surviving Summer - An American teen gets shipped off to Australia to learn a lesson. And that lesson is surfing, apparently.
Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce - My favorite part of this story is Travis Kelce’s mom saying meeting Taylor was “OK” on the Today Show. Savage.
New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce Podcast - Travis Kelce having a podcast with his brother where they talk about Twilight and answer people’s dumb football questions is a green flag.
Case 63 Podcast - How much do we think Oscar Isaac got paid to do this?
The Roman Empire but for women? I think it’s Titanic - the movie, not the historical event - but am open to other answers.
The GMAT - Thoughts and prayers to the person who submitted this.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts - I like this album in theory, but it just hasn’t stuck with me for some reason.
Drive to Survive - Are we becoming F1 girlies now? Let me know.
